unit two medieval period

  1. I think the story will be about a king and his people going to battle. It will be set in the medieval time period. I think that the story will have a lot of action. I assume there will be irony and sarcasm in the story.
  2.      When I was reading the story it was challenging for me to understand the writing style. I heard the rap and it helped me comprehend the story a lot more. I liked how the story told the truth about sinning and money is the roots of all evil. Since the story included some parts of the Bible I was able to understand what they were talking about.                                        There were three men sitting in a bar drinking when this other dude came in and told a sob story about how his friend died in his sleep. So the three men got mad because death was killing everybody. The three men walked up to this old man and the old man was wrapped up in bandages and bleeding. They had asked the old man how he defeated death so he said he prayed every night for God to come take him away. The old man told them that they could defeat death under the tree. He told them that because he knew that there was money under the three and money was the root of all evil. Then they had to pull straws and the youngest one got the shortest straw.  He went to get wine and he got rat poison .While he was gone the other two were plotting to kill him when he came back. Then when he came they killed him and themselves by drinking the poisonous wine. So in the end the old man ended up being death himself.
3.
I thought that the ending was ironic because the old man said they would find death under the tree but they were actually looking for a person. Instead of finding a person they found death itself. They died under the tree. They saw death but they didn’t really know it was him when they walked up to him. The three men asked where death lives and he pointed to an old tree and said there.  He was really saying to them that he was death but he was being sarcastic.  At the end of the story the three men thought about killing each other. Two of them killed the youngest boy with a sword and a shovel.  The other boy killed them with rat poison. So they all died of greed. They found death but not how they expected.  Death was laughing at them when they died because they found death.

I think that my work refer back to the standards because it help me understand irony. How death actually being the person they was looking for but instead of trying to fight death they died because of greed. It is ironic that death ending up being the person telling them that they can find death under the tree I was expecting to read something else.

unit one The Anglo-Saxon

1. I think that its adressing that the standard we are working on for unit is that we learning about historical facts.

2.
After reading Beowulf, I think that it is another version of Shakespeare writing and I didn’t find it interesting.   Beowulf relates to the Anglo Saxon culture because the wars and the importance of their beliefs. The story was also confusing because it had so many characters. It would have been less confusing if they had more modern names. The most exciting character was Grendel. He was the most exciting because he was unstoppable and he was funny looking. His mustache is what makes him look funny. I also like Beowulf because he is kind of like a modern day superhero.
The part of Beowulf that stuck out to me was when Shield died the people had carried him to the sea.  I found it cool that Shield was an orphan. I found it interesting that his people followed his last request to be carried to the sea. I like the description of how they said it was gold and had swords in it. He was still strong when he went to god on his finest hour.
I also liked the night Grendel came to attack. There were bloody footprints found at night.  The Danes were angry and Grendel came back for more. When I read about the bloody footprints, I was scared by the story but it made me want to read more of the story.

I think that it is werid that the Anglo Saxons believed in many gods. It is werid to me because most people believe in one god.

3.
Example1. The warriors are well known/ celebrities
·         he was famous  throughout the North
·         they were great warriors
·         They was great leaders throughout the north and was banned from different kingdom and the dragon tried to keep

The warriors protect their community from dragons, other kingdoms, and Grendel and make sure that no harm comes in their way.

Example2. Their religion
·         May God repay you always as He has just now
Their religion confused me because I thought that they believed in one God but they really believed in many gods.
Example3. Loyalty to leader
·         His people carried him to the sea, which was his last request
The culture was loyal to their leaders. When the king died they obeyed his last request to carry him out to the sea when they really didn’t have to. That was a sign of loyalty.

4 Beowulf is compared to spider man because they both save people and they are different because they battle different. Spider man uses his web to swing from building to building and Beowulf walks to where he has to go. Modern day hero stories always have romantic story for example spider man falls in love with his best friend.  There is not any romance in the older stories.  For example Beowulf didn’t have any romance in the story.  Spider man has to rely on his super powers to fight crime and Beowulf uses his weapons and his allies to fight crime.

5 I think that he was too cocky and he kind of deserved to die.
Example 1: Not one king among
the neighboring peoples
dared greet me
with a sword;
I feared no one.
Its support this because I think that he is arrogant and he thinks high mighty of his self like he cant be beat, especially when he says, “I feared no one”.
I address the standards in number one by interpreting the different examples we had.
·          The warriors are well known/ celebrities
·          he was famous  throughout the North
·         Their religion
·         Loyalty to leader
This is a part of their culture that is wrap all in this story
